How to Fix “To Use System Restore, You Must Specify Which Windows Installation to Restore” Error

This error appears when you try to do a system restore. Usually, this error disables you from completing the restoration. Some times, the device fails to boot because of the error. It typically happens when the system files are corrupted or the hard drive is faulty. Do not worry, follow the steps mentioned below and fix the issue.
Here’s how to fix to use system restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore error
  • Performing the CHKDSK
  1. After the Windows symbol starts showing on the screen, click on the F8 keys.
  2. By using this key, you can launch the Recovery Options button.
  3. By going to the Recovery Options menu, you need to choose the Troubleshoot option.
  4. On that window, select the Advanced Options button.
  5. Choose the Command Prompt menu.
  6. Go through the integrity of the volume.
  7. You have to start scanning the Primary Partition option.
  8. Enter the below-mentioned command:
chkdsk C: /offlinescanandfix
  • Performing the SFC scan
  1. Press on the Start menu.
  2. Enter the Run in the text field.
  3. In case you are not able to find which file is the system drive, once the command prompt menu starts appearing, you need to enter the below-mentioned command:
  4. If you are able to find the Users folder in the menu list, then this is because it is on the system drive.
  5. In case, you are not able to get that folder, start changing the system drive by entering the alphabets of the volumes.
  6. Once you have got the system volume option by going to the command prompt, enter the below-mentioned command:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows
  • Start using the Deployment image servicing and management
  1. Press on the Start menu.
  2. Enter the Run in the provided box.
  3. After the command prompt showing on the screen, you need to enter the below-mentioned command:
/Image:C:Windows /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth/Source:C:WindowsWinSxS
  1. After you are getting the error, you need to place the Windows bootable USB in the system port.
  2. After that, enter the below mentioned command:
/Image:C:Windows /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:SourcesInstall.esd:1 /limitaccess
  1. In case the install.esd changes into the install.wim, then type the below mentioned command:
/Image:C:Windows /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:SourcesInstall.wim /limitaccess
  • Start using the Bootrec
  1. Press on the Start menu.
  2. Enter the Run in the text field.
  3. After the command prompt showing on the screen, enter the below-mentioned command:
/Fixmbr
/FixBoot
/RebuildBCD
  1. Start rebooting the computer.
  • Running the basic Windows repair
  1. Place the bootable USB or DVD.
  2. Start booting the USB or DVD.
  3. Choose the Repair your computer option.
